The bills are mounting faster than the paycheck trickles in. The family you dreamed of, has just become a bunch of noisy kids screeching and crying, laughing, and constantly vying for attention. You wonder when you will ever get to spend quality time with your spouse again… Life is out of control! That peace you are supposed to experience as a Christian seems like a mirage. Is this the life that God wants you to live?
Christians can feel overwhelmed sometimes. You know you should spend time in prayer and meditating on God’s word, but feel you can’t find time in the middle of the chaos you call life. As you feel life spiraling out of control, it is hard to imagine that there could be a better way to live, but there is!
I would like to offer three tips to start you on a journey to finding peace in the middle of your storm. With God’s help, you can get on track to becoming the steward that God wants you to be of your life, relationships, and finances.
Make time for meeting God.
Each day you live is a gift of twenty-four hours that God has given you. Think about it. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live, or what you do for a living. God has given you the same amount of time as He has for each of the more than 7 billion people alive on the planet, so take a moment each day to pause and connect with God through His Word, and through prayer. You decide how much time is right for you, but don’t neglect to give back to Him a portion of the time He has graciously given you.
Give your smiles away.
There are very important people in our lives, there are acquaintances, and there are strangers. The most important people in our lives such as spouses and family not only should receive our best smiles as a gift from us, they also deserve some of our time. They need us to be present when we are spending time with them. Even if you don’t have time for everyone, you can share your smiles! Your co-workers and even strangers will be encouraged by a smile that reflects God’s love. In the end, no one will be more encouraged than you, as you invest in your relationships.
Get financial clarity.
Life comes at you and its easy to lose control of the finances. Groceries, gas, utility bills, medical emergencies, and the list keeps growing. How can you ever manage to take control? Start by analyzing where you are. If you have debts, begin listing them out from smallest to largest. Track your current expenses, and begin to budget. It may seem painful to stop and figure out what you owe, and what your expenses are, but let me assure you, it will be far more painful to ignore your financial state. Ignorance is not bliss. As you pay down your debt and keep your expenses below your income, you can begin to explore what it looks like to manage money God’s way. The important thing to remember is that everything we have is a gift from God, therefore, seek His direction as you work towards financial integrity. If you still aren’t sure where to start, consider Financial Peace University from Dave Ramsey. I am not affiliated with them in any way, but I appreciate their approach to getting out of debt.
You can rarely find happiness by chasing it. In a world of “you be you,” we often miss “be who God made you be”. I don’t believe that life was meant to be easy, but it should be fulfilling. You should have peace on the journey. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude. God sees when a sparrow falls. He clothes the flowers in elegant beauty, and Jesus says that He cares much more about you. He has a plan for your life. Are you ready to live?
